Swinton and District Excelsior Band
Where are they now?
As with all bands, our
members tend to move on, often when they go to university or find work
elsewhere. Some lose touch with us, but many stay in touch and
return to help out, or simply mock.
Here are some pictures of past band members as we never saw them.
If you have others for inclusion (funny or serious!) please send them to
us!
As 2005 seems to have seen more weddings involving Swinton Band members than ever before click here for the Swinton Wedding Album

Maggie-san
with a fellow teacher in Ninohe, Japan. Maggie became only
the second non-Japanese ever to participate in the All Japan
Ensemble Contest! She is now playing for Crystal
Palace Band |
Swinton weds Stape! David and Nicolette marry at the Lodge, Malton with Tom as best man.
Four rabbits caught
in the headlights! Tom is in Derby and Matthew in Scotland,
while Peter is working in Manchester and playing for Tyldesley
Band. Mary has moved to Bedford
and is now playing for Hitchin
Band. |
And will this turn me into a bandmaster?
Danger-Experimental Archaeologists at Work! Helen smelting iron with Bradford University at Rievaulx. Stop Press - This is out of date! She is now working for the Crown Prosecution Service - Fraud department (be afraid!!) and playing for Crystal Palace Band |
Here come the beer-monsters! Janella on tour in Belgium with Stape Silver. However at the moment she is taking a well-earned rest from banding! |
Edd tries to find Frances a drink on a visit from the other side of the Pennines. They are now playing with Tyldesley Band. |
As will be apparent from the following photos of Bobbie....

The answer to that question is all too often the same......Suddaby's ! |
| Suddabys again, but here
the real answer would seem to be Mortal Peril! Dave left us to
play for Lockwood
and enjoyed a very brief gloat after Malton Brass
While this picture was also taken in Suddaby's Lee is shortly off to warmer climes -about as far from Swinton as humanly possible! He's off to renew his love affair with Australian tractors.
David has recently returned from a tour of duty with the Army in Iraq. |
Lizzie lost no time in finding a congenial band the other side of the Pennines - Christmas playing with Timperley band was obviously a warmer affair than it is with Swinton! However, she moved on to pastures new with "Besses" and is still back on our books although working in Huddersfield! |
We have sadly lost Christian, one of the newer recruits to learners. However Swinton's loss is, we hope, Denmark's gain, as he has gone there to train as a doctor. Remember, just don't be ill in Copenhagen!
Susan is now enjoying
a the life of a student at Sheffield University - the student
lifestyle evidently carries on when she's back with us during the
vacs! |
Yes, Tom, we know SLOB's uniform was a bright shirt, but you didn't have to upset the camera this much! Is this what Birmingham does to you?
Not exactly where is she now, but I couldn't think where else to put this photo of Lizzie's first efforts on euphonium!
What a contrast! This is just to remind Lizzie that there WAS a time up in Glasgow playing for Besses o' th' Barn - even if it is all a blur now!
![]() Kevin (cornet) and Will are now over the other side of Ryedale with Kirkbymoorside Town Band, so we can still admire their dancing skills at the Ryedale Bands Christmas party!
Captions please, words fail me! |
The "Posse" back in their natural environment
Is David auditioning for Dr Who? |
Bringing up the new generation - Heidi
and Emma listening to the band at Old Malton Garden fete. |
This is what Mary keeps bridesmaids for!
A reunion of Swinton players, of whom only Hedley is still with Swinton, at Mary and Stewart's wedding
Edd and Frances with the two Jennies after their wedding at St Leonard's
Lizzie with a supporting cast of ushers (John, Peter and Thomas) at Edd and Frances' wedding. All four of these sophisticates have played with Swinton at some stage!
And they went to the pub for a nice quiet drink - Peter, Tom and Matthew find themselves demonstrating the finer points of Morris dance at the Beer festival!
Matthew preparing to celebrate after Emley won our section at Malton Brass He is shortly on the move to United Co-op Yorkshire.
Mary and Stewart on honeymoon in Kenya. They are now back in Bedford and Stewart is playing with Bedford Town while Mary has just joined Hitchin Band.
Peter may have moved on to Tyldesley but he is still supporting us at Darlington - or at least supporting Beccy!
Lizzie remained with Besses though tooth problems saw her shift for a while to tenor horn. Just after Christmas (along with two very excited deps from Swinton!) they found themselves playing at Manchester City Football ground for the Chelsea match! However at the end of her course at Salford she has returned to Swinton as 2nd Euphonium!
Some things don't change: Maggie and Frances are still there on the dance floor and the little black dress is virtually unchanged too!
Maggie entertaining the
drinkers in the bar of St Keverne bandroom on a Crystal Palace Band
trip to the far south-west. Most recently she paid a quick visit to
the frozen north to help Swinton out at Malton Brass - just as much
energy but a bit more organised than in this photo! |
Madder than ever they've branched out into technicolor this year! |
Roy and Megan were welcome guests at the
Band Dinner this year!
If you want to know the time ask a police horse - Maggie finds a new friend at Uppermill.
Our third cornets at Hardraw Scar 2007. The most recent previous photo I can find of them when they were third cornets together shows Lizzie (extreme left) and Susan (just below Dorothy) with Jim Shepherd in 1995.
Jane is now settled in Cornwall and playing flugel for Gweek Silver Band
Mary recently spent a morning with hundreds of other mad bandspeople and Harold Bishop playing the "Neighbours" theme tune in Trafalgar Square!
Nicole is studying medicine at Newcastle
University. Despite having joined Backworth
Colliery Band there, she is helping us out over the Summer!
At first glance you would think
"Situation normal, in the pub as usual!" but there was a
bit more to it when David, Maggie, Frances, Peter and John met up
on Saturday evening. These maniacs had spent the day proving
that there's more to Yorkshire than banding by successfully
attempting the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. Peter
appears to have been challenged to juggle on the top of each peak
as well!
Preparing for a night at the Beer festival with a barbeque at Stewart's are Claire (regular Swinton groupie!), Frances and Edd, David and Nicolette, Tom and Hedley. Maggie is hiding behind Stewart, and Mary is skulking in the kitchen! |
