DARLINGTON
This year Darlington is on Saturday 17th March – Please put
this date in your diary now. If
you already know that you are not able to be there please tell Tracey or
Alice NOW. We cannot borrow
players for the area so we need to make sure we have a band and if we need
to “shuffle” people around it gives those playing different parts a
better chance to get used to them.
It you have not informed us before Christmas that you are attending we will
assume that you are able to make it!
Times of bus to follow but it is likely to be an early start!
New Band Jobs
Keep your eye on the Dates for
the Diary section as we are adding new dates as they arrive to make sure you
are always up to date.
No excuses for not knowing that a band job is on!
Collectors
Please
note collectors will be needed for a number of dates in December – This is
a time when we make a lot of our money for the year so please when the time
comes to ask make yourselves as available as possible.
Christmas Playing
Is fast approaching. We are
trialling a few new jobs this year and have a couple of indoor jobs too. But
we still have a few outside jobs. For those of you who have not done these
before you need to dress up warm. It’s best to put on lots of thinner
layers but don’t get them too tight. I would recommend a couple of pairs
of trousers or try PJ bottoms under your trousers! At least 2 pairs of socks
to keep your feet well insulated you will need gloves for your hands and a
hat for your head as this is where you will lose most of your heat.
Christmas is a time when the band needs to try and maximize our income, we
need everyone to support and come along to play and take part in our jobs.
For the longer jobs i.e. Malton market place and the Santa Specials please
discuss amongst your section to ensure we have cover throughout the job!
New Instruments for Learners
Thanks
to Dorothy’s hard work we have recently received a grant to buy new
instruments for the learners. When
put together with the grant that Steve King managed to acquire for us we
have managed to buy – 8 x Cornets and 2 x Euphoniums and 2 x baritones we
also have on order a baby Bb Bass. It’s
great to have new instruments for the learners, it makes it much easier for
them to play and hopefully will give them a boost and a bit of
encouragement.
Bag
Packing!
Packers
for this need to be 12+ and unfortunately children cannot stand around with
parents who are packing. Only
one person allowed per till. We
are hoping to cover the hours between 5 and 9 and there are 16 tills.
That means 76 hours of packing!
If we start with everyone dong a couple of hours and see where that
leaves us. I will put up a
chart in the bandroom and you can add your name to the 2 hours you can do.
(Those that add their name first get first choice!
Bandroom Cleaning Rota.
The
names of those that have not yet done the cleaning were put into a
hat and drawn out.
For November/December, Rachel &
Ian Smith are on the rota
As the bandroom is not used in December no cleaning will be required.
More names will be selected for next year soon.
For access to the bandroom to complete your cleaning session please ask to
borrow keys from Stephen, Dorothy, Catherine or Nigel.
Also don’t forget if you really don’t want to do
your session Rob has agreed to take on extra sessions (I’ve now been
trained how to do even cleaning the toilets) for a fee of £10/person, £5
of which he will donate to band funds.
Some
rules of behaviour and practice hints for the Brass Band musician Part 2!
To
be able to check your own tone well, always continue playing briefly after
the conductor has stopped.
Staying away from rehearsals is an excellent way to give proof of your
importance.
Help your fellow musicians by playing yourself so loudly, that another man's
mistakes attract less attention.
In order to obtain yourself extra certainty, it is best to ask questions
about issues that have been discussed on previous rehearsals.
More
hints and tips next month!
