Summer is here!

At last! Make the most of it!  It will be gone by the time you go on holiday!

Wednesday night is Pint Night!

A number of us went up to the Blacksmith’s Arms on Monday night to present them with a framed photo of the band and spent an enjoyable half-hour or so!

As a result we reached a democratic agreement that Wednesday nights would be a good time to go for a drink together after band.  It needn’t be a long session, but a regular social gathering would be nice.  So as from tonight – see you at the Blacksmith’s Arms! (As well as, not instead of the Bandroom!!!)

 YHBBA Brass Band Workshop

The annual workshop led by members of Grimethorpe Colliery Band will take place at South Minsthorpe on 25th October.  I can’t emphasise strongly enough how worthwhile a day this is!  No matter what your ability and experience you will get a great deal out of it.  Great teaching, the experience of playing under a first-rate conductor, making new friends and excellent food – don’t miss it.

For information and booking forms when available ask Dorothy or look on www.yhbba.org.uk.

Poster Competition.

YHBBA are offering a £20 prize in a competition to design a new poster for Malton Brass. Dorothy has details of exactly what information needs to go on the A4 poster and when designs need to be submitted.  Meanwhile, all you budding graphic artists, get thinking!

Band Summer Barbeque

If you haven’t put your names down for this – get a move on!! You’ve not got much time left!  This year’s barbeque will be on Saturday 5th July from 6.30 p.m.  at Steve and Tracey’s, 7 The Chase, Norton.

(P.S. Please bring a Bottle!)

Learners’ Group

The Learners will have their first playing jobs for some years in July. As well as playing for Old Malton Garden Fete on 12th July, they are playing in Malton Market place on the morning of Saturday July 19th.  Any members of main band who can join them for this will be very welcome!  For learners who have not got band uniforms, please can you wear black trousers and shoes and a white shirt, together with a black jumper or jacket if you have one.

There will be a practice for all those who are playing for these jobs on Sunday 6th July from 2.00-4.00 p.m.  Please try to be there so that Nigel and Cliff know what resources they have.

The Market Place engagement will be playing outside Hoppers, so space is very limited.  Please leave your instrument cases in the car and be  prepared to stand to play!  If you really MUST have a chair, please let Catherine know!

Conducting Course

YHBBA 's day course on 20th July at Ripon has been cancelled owing to lack of response

Uniforms

Handley’s are coming to the Bandroom on Monday night to measure for new jackets.  If you need measuring please wear a shirt and tie to ensure they get the right measurements.

They will also be bringing sample hoodies for people to try on before they order.  If you would like one please sign up on Maggie’s list – they will cost £26.50  (Stop Press - that is without VAT!  Final cost will be £30!)

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Happy Birthday to:

As usual to anyone else I have missed –

                             Happy Birthday!

A  gentle and unnecessary reminder

We do need to be careful about how and where we park in Swinton if we don’t want the residents on the warpath!

So don’t block access to houses or fields, don’t park on grass verges, and make sure that big vehicles (Busses, ambulances, Tesco vans can get past!

Spiralling Fuel Prices!

Given the increased cost of fuel, it would seem a good idea to try and economise by taking as few cars as possible to band jobs.  So it would make sense to share cars as much as possible – please be prepared to offer lifts, and if you are given a lift, please try and make a contribution towards the driver’s costs!

Vacancies

If you know or hear of any experienced cornet (or trumpet even!) players looking for a band please try and point them in our direction – the more the merrier!

Of course players on any brass band instrument are always welcome!

And finally…

…you guessed. it’s nag time!

It’s lovely to have a happy band, enjoying practices and full of fun, and I feel a bit of a killjoy in raising this.  Please can we be allowed to hear what Nigel is saying!! Whether it affects you or not (and actually most things do!) if Nigel is speaking, then listen to him and allow others to, by not talking among yourselves!  Whether your chat is relevant to the music or not – save it till he has finished talking.  Nag over!!

Availability for jobs

PLEASE, PLEASE let Dorothy know as soon as you know that you won’t be available for a job!  It makes it much easier for her to find replacements if she knows well in advance.  Dropping out at the last minute for any other reason than death is not acceptable!!

Please check you diaries now with regard to Hardraw and Malton contests – it’s even more difficult to organise replacement players for contests than it is for ordinary jobs.  Let her know now if you have a problem with either of these!

14th September and 2nd November may seem a long time away but actually they will be here sooner than you think.

While Dorothy is away please can you let Maggie and Ellis know if you cannot make engagements!
