Swinton Post
Volume 5, Issue 7                                                                           July 2007

It just goes on getting better…

…storms, flood water, broken legs, overworked bandmasters etc., etc.!!!

Please try and give band all your commitment as we battle with all fate has to throw at us!!

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Happy Birthday to:

Anna               July 16th

As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!

Get Well Soon!

As you are all probably aware Ian W. has had an accident at work, which has left him in hospital with a badly broken leg.  He has undergone an operation and expects to be in hospital for about three weeks, and is not expected to get back to work etc. for about four months.

We shall miss him – meanwhile best wishes Ian, and get yourself well soon – we need you!

Congratulations…

…to Patrick who is getting married on 10th August in Ireland.  We wish the happy couple all possible good luck and happiness!

Belated Congratulations…

...to Derek and Marjorie who celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on 20th June!  We hope they enjoy their celebratory cruise and look forward to seeing Derek back refreshed and raring to go!

Band Barbeque

Steve and Tracey are hosting a barbeque at their home on the evening of Saturday 21st July.  All band members, learners and their families are very welcome.  Ask Steve or Tracey for details.

Thornton Dale engagement

Please note that the job on 29th July at Thornton Dale is CANCELLED!  This gives us a whole free Sunday afternoon to play with!

A day on the beach at Filey??

St Leonard’s Concert.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this fantastic evening.  African Mission have asked me to thank you all for the sum of £655 which was raised by this concert.  It will go towards the purchase of much-needed medication and equipment for St Mary’s Hospital, Gulu in Uganda.

Ice Skating Trip

Kath needs to know NOW if people want to go on the trip!  If there are not enough takers she will have to cancel the bus!

The trip is scheduled for 12th July leaving at 5.45 p.m. and will cost £12.00 with the aim of raising money for the band.

Please let her know tonight if you want to go!

Easingwold Contest

This contest is this Saturday (30th June) from 6.00 p.m. in Easingwold Marketplace.  It is well worth going to particularly if it is not raining!

If you do go, have a look at the display in the Co-op window – Dorothy and I sweated blood over it while providing an afternoon’s entertainment for the inhabitants of Easingwold – who says street theatre is dead?

Fund-raising

Last year we took the year off from fundraising so as a result there is a financial crisis!!

We really need more money - ideally from people who are not already giving loads to the band!If anybody has bright ideas about this – don’t keep them to yourselves.  Even better, if anyone wants to organise something – please do!

Obviously there are people who will help- you won’t have to do everything!  Keep the ideas and the offers coming!  Do talk to Dorothy about what you want to do and any ideas you may have!

Keep the ideas coming!!

Whit-Friday 2008

Put it in your diaries now!  On Friday 16th May next year Swinton is going to make its first venture to Saddleworth to compete at the Whits!

If you saw Brassed Off, you’ll know a bit about these contests – a potent mix of bands, crowds and booze!  But you don’t have to drink to find them an amazing experience – at what other contest can a band like Swinton compete with the likes of Grimethorpe and Black Dyke?  Every brass band player should do this at least once in a lifetime – and some become addicted!

Those of us who went with other bands this year enjoyed it immensely and we have enough offers of help from ex-players and friends to definitely make it viable for those who would like to do it!

It will mean leaving Malton about midday so you’ll need to book the Friday off!  More details nearer the time!

Vacancies

We are still seriously short of cornets so if you know or hear of any experienced cornet (or even trumpet!) players looking for a band please try and point them in our direction - the more the merrier!

We shall also be losing horn and baritone players in September so if you know anyone who might be interested....

Holiday and Engagement Lists

The Holiday list is now up on the board. PLEASE fill in the dates when you will be away so that Dorothy can try and find players to take your place! Also please fill in your engagement list and let Dorothy have it so that she can transfer everything to her master lists and see who can do what!  She will then give you your list and can then settle down to the happy task of borrowing players to fill your seats while you are away!

Please be aware that with Kevin not available at the moment, it is absolutely imperative that Dorothy knows EXACTLY what resources she has, as she has to find conductors as well! So please let her know all your comings and goings!!

Calling all Learners (and their parents!)

Please note there WILL after all be Learners session on 30th June! However we will entirely understand if you’d rather go to Easingwold!

However there will NOT be Learners on 21st July – instead you are invited to Steve and Tracey’s barbecue!
