Swinton Post
Volume 4, Issue 6                                                                           July 2006

Welcome back to Swinton Post!  Owing to total disorganisation and the absence of the Editor at the beginning of the month, a June edition didn’t happen.  SORRY!  However we are fleetingly back on schedule – next month’s edition will be early owing to the projected absence of the Secretary!!

Personnel changes.

We bid a fond farewell to the Lovell family as they uproot themselves and move as far as possible from us – to Canada!  Martin and Michael have been valuable members of the bass and trombone sections and Steven has often helped out the trombones as well.  Thank you all for all your help and skills, and we wish you luck in your new home.

We are also glad to welcome Lizzie back to Swinton.  She has got herself a job in York and so is leaving Besses in the lurch to come back to us, initially on horn.

Ceilidh

We are planning a new venture this autumn both to enjoy ourselves and raise some money for band.  The plan is to hold a Ceilidh at Suddaby’s featuring a Ceilidh band from Ampleforth College.

No date is fixed as yet, but it should be a fun occasion so get practicing your dancing – everyone will be expected to join in!

Smartie Tubes

Lots of band members (you know who you are!!) still have outstanding Smartie tubes and boxes.  Please don’t forget to fill them up and return them to Anna.

Despite the tragic demise of the Smartie tube, the band is always glad of donations, so don’t stop collecting the small change!  All contributions gratefully received!

50 years of YHBBA

To celebrate 50 years of the Yorkshire and Humberside Brass Band Association there will be a special concert by Grimethorpe Colliery Band of a newly-commissioned work at Ripon Cathedral on 15th July at 7.30.  Dorothy still has some tickets available at £10.  Please try and support the Association!

YHBBA workshop

This is positively the last call for this workshop to be held at South Minsthorpe on 11th November.  If you haven’t done it before – it is very worthwhile and great fun.  Members of Grimethorpe Colliery U.K. Coal Band help the participants to prepare a short concert in the course of the day.  Excellent food is also provided and places are much in demand.  Get a form from Dorothy NOW!

Attention all Learners (and Main Band!)

Because of the band barbeque on the 1st July and Old Malton garden Fete on the 8th July there will be no Learners on those dates.

While we are very glad to have welcomed quite a few new learners this year, there are still some vacancies in Learners!  If you are aged between 8 and 108 and would like to have a go, we’d be delighted to help you learn.  Come along on a Saturday evening and have a go!

Anna               16th July
Sarah              20th July

As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!

Appearance at Band Jobs

Please don’t dismiss this as just another nag – it is something that makes a huge difference to how we are perceived and so on whether people want to employ us!

·           When everything is out of the trailer, please put your instrument cases, jacket cases and all unnecessary clutter into the trailer, where it can be safely out of sight.

·             Please DO NOT hang cases on the bandstand or on the back of your chair.

·           Assume that we will be wearing jackets unless the man in charge says otherwise.  If he does, then please fit in with the majority – whether it be shirt-sleeves or cagoules!

·           Please ensure that you have a jacket cover with your name on it in which you bring your jacket to jobs.  Do not wear it on the way to the job – it will get creased and sad-looking.  Putting on your jacket is the thing to do immediately before sitting down to play.

·           Do not eat while wearing your jacket – especially not ice-cream!

·           And finally – at the end of the summer, getting your jacket dry-cleaned is a good idea!

19th-23rd July – Suddaby’s Summer Beer Festival.  All of a sudden you will find all our ex-players return to Malton – I wonder why!  These evenings are great – good beer, live music (including, I believe our very own Hedley!) and a chance to socialise and catch up with old friends.

Holiday Dates

PLEASE let Dorothy know as soon as humanly possible of any holiday dates or other absences that you haven’t told her – better to tell her twice than not at all!  She really needs to know so that she can arrange cover for you and go off on her holiday secure in the knowledge that everything is sorted.

Congratulations

To Matthew M. for his 1st class degree from Newcastle and to Tom, Susan and Lizzie on their 2:1 degrees at Newcastle, Sheffield and Salford Universities.  All of them have achieved brilliant results and are now out in the real world.
