Again this month I must apologise for the newsletter
been a tad late, New Year was a good night..................
I hope you all had a good festive season and are now fully recovered from
any hangovers so that we can begin working on Vizcaya.
Birthdays
– ha ha, there is no escape from standing on your chair!
1st Jan – Andrew & Chris

7th Jan – Matthew M
A bit belated this month, but I hope you had a very Happy Birthday. As
usual to anyone else I have missed – I hope you have a very Happy
Birthday!
Caroling – The best Year EVER!!!!
This years caroling was the most successful we have ever had. We managed
to raise a whopping £3423.18!!!!!! This is the best year
we’ve ever had by about £800, so give yourselves all a big pat on the
back.
The committee would like to thank the entire band for their efforts, but
particular thanks go to the Learners. This year saw more learners out
helping than in previous years. Many members of main band commented on the
contribution they made. Thanks also go to all the parents and grandparents
who gave up their free time to rattle collecting tins and brave fierce
dogs!
Jumpers
Do you have one of the new band jumpers?
Do you want one of the new band jumpers?
If so, then see Dorothy. She has a choice of two types, £25 for an
acrylic or £28.50 for a wool mix. They both come in a range of sizes and
will come in useful for those chilly jobs where you want an extra layer
under your jacket.
.
Welcome
This month we welcome another new player to the band. Margaret Spencer has
moved up on to 3rd cornet from the Learners Band. Well done!

Are you suitably insured?
It has been noticed recently by a few members of
the band that contrary to their understanding, their instruments were not
fully insured under their household insurance. One of the commitments we
all make by having a band instrument is to make sure it is fully insured
away from the bandroom, as the band cannot afford to insure all the
instruments.
I have my own instrument and so was incredibly paranoid about making sure
I had good insurance – I think I have found just that. www.musicguard.co.uk
are the company which is recommended by Normans and are a specialist
insurance company. My cornet was insured for £1000 and cost me £20
(including £5 online discount) for a year. This insures me for the year
anywhere in the EU and 30 days anywhere else in the world against theft,
accidental damage and fire (how a cornet may catch fire I don’t know!).
Also included is £1 million public liability insurance should somebody
trip over your case or something similar!
Their premiums have increased slightly recently, but they are still good
value. I would recommend that first you or your parent checks the
household insurance and then checks out musicguard.
A
few of my favourite quotes from caroling...
· “What
number next?” “Twelvish?” “Which
one’s that?”
· “Do
you feel Christmassy yet?” “Let me think about this, I’m freezing my
**** off, I have a cornet in my hands, am playing carols and have a Santa
hat on. Yep its Christmas!”
· “Hello!
We’ve brought you a Brass Band!” (a particular favourite
of mine!)
· “Hello,
it’s Swinton Band! What would you like to drink?” (nice landlord –
think he’ll be included on all future pub jobs!)
· “At
last - we’ve waited a whole year for you lot.”
Congratulations
There seems to have been a mad rush for engagement rings in the run up to
Christmas! Ed finally got round to asking Frances to marry him and she
accepted. Ed wasn’t the only one, David and Jude have also decided to
tie the knot, as have Adam and Liz. So it looks like you all may need
several hats for the summer of 2005! Before any of the others even think
about it – me and Stewart have already booked the band for August 27th
2005!
TIP OF THE MONTH......
Now is the best time of the year to clean out your instrument, we
haven’t any jobs for a while so you can get it back in tune and in full
working order in plenty of time. (you will not be the first to find
bizarre objects (coins, cigarette butts, old socks, etc) in your
instrument after caroling!) |
