Swinton Post
Volume 5, Issue 4                                                                           April 2007

Happy Easter everyone!

Spring is springing and the sun is shining (at least for the next five minutes!)  It must be nearly time for the start of the summer season!

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Happy Birthday to:

              Michael              3rd April

As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!

Band Dinner

As usual this was a really good evening, and despite Steve’s gloomy forecasts there were loads of people there, both current members and ex-players.  It was particularly nice to see Roy and Megan Lester –for newer members Roy used to play Bb bass, at one time commuting to band practice from Lincoln!

Jane carried out her first duty as the new Band Chairman by presenting the trophies to the winners of awards for attendance, improvement etc.  As well as the usual trophies and awards, (see next newsletter for the full list!) Dorothy made a presentation to Brian as retiring Chairman.

The tie competition was as usual strongly contended and Pete presented Dan with the winner’s tiepin!

The formal part of the evening over, the energetic transferred their attention to the dance floor and the less energetic to the bar!

Thank you to Steve and Dorothy for organising a wonderful evening!

Music Amnesty

Now that it is time for a general spring clean around the house, can everybody please have a general hunt for pieces of music, practice copies, solo parts etc.  I will put a box out at the front of the Bandroom for all the items you find!  I am always amazed at what finds its way home with my family and emerges from hibernation months or even years later!  So see what you can find – all contributions gratefully received!!

TIP OF THE MONTH!

Now really is the time to go through the music for the coming season and work out what bits you can’t play!  Then practice them until you can!  If you are having real difficulty don’t be too proud to ask for help; ask your section leader or Kevin! Alternatively come along to Learners on a Saturday evening and go through it with Steve!

Vacancies

If you know or hear of any experienced cornet (or trumpet even!) players looking for a band please try and point them in our direction – the more the merrier!

We shall also be losing horn and baritone players come September, so if you know of anyone who might be interested….

There are still some places in the learners group available!  Parents, if you are not already playing or learning, come and give it a try! If you are transporting your children, you might as well have fun learning too! (The editor can personally recommend this as an approach!)

Fifty-plus Club.

It has been agreed that rather than find another organiser, the Club will be wound up in September.  Thanks to Brian for all the organising and hard work he has done over the years.  Members who would like to continue giving to Band – please do!  Anna will be delighted to advise you about Gift Aid etc.!

AGM.

There was a good turnout to the meeting and officers and committee members were elected for the coming year.  All the officers made their reports and the band seems to be in a very healthy state overall.

Sadly Brian announced his retirement as Chairman and Jane was duly elected as his successor.

Officers now are:

Chairman – Jane
Vice-Chairman – Ian
Bandmaster – Kevin
Deputy Bandmaster – Steve
Secretary – Dorothy
Treasurer – Anna
Learners’ Co-ordinator – Catherine

The new committee consists of the officers together with life members, Derek and Colin and the following elected members:

Kath, Maggie, Valerie, Andrew B, Hedley, Mike and Tim.

So if you have things that you would like the committee to discuss, these are the people you need to talk to!

Easter Monday

Not unsurprisingly there will be no band practice on Easter Monday, but we will expect everyone back refreshed and not too full of chocolate on Wednesday!

Hail and farewell!

First of all of course we say farewell and a huge thank-you to Brian as he retires as Chairman. Sadly, after eleven years or so as Chairman, he has had enough. We would like to thank him for all that he has done for us both as Chairman and as the most formidable and shameless fundraiser ever!  His capacity for coercing money from total strangers is truly amazing.

We are delighted to welcome Jane as our new Chairman - as Brian says, if she can cope with the Town Council she should be able to manage us!

Newcomers to the Committee are Andrew B. and Maggie.  Andrew hasn’t been in the band that long, but has shown immense commitment over the carolling season and will bring a new eye to bear on running the band.  Maggie has been with us for a much longer time and is finally old enough to join the committee to represent the younger majority of the band.

We are very glad also to say hello to two newcomers to the band. The front row cornet line-up is glad to welcome Jason to their ranks and the euphoniums are equally delighted to count Ian among their number!

Rather sooner than anticipated, we say goodbye to Lizzie.  She has got a job organising the music festival at Huddersfield so she has had to move.  However she hopes to continue helping us out as and when needed, and she and Dan will be around in the run up to the St Leonard’s concert at least.

Gift Aid

At the start of a new financial year, it may be a good time to remind people about gift aid.  If you are a tax payer the kind government considers that if you are giving money away you don’t need to pay tax on it. As a result they will pay the tax on any donations you make to direct to the charity you are giving to!  This means that they add nearly half as much again to your donations.  So if you want to make a donation to band, ask Anna for details of the scheme – it can make a huge difference to the band’s income!

YHBBA Workshop.

Advance notice that this will be on Saturday 27th October at South Minsthorpe.  This is a really worthwhile day out – teaching from Grimethorpe players and excellent food!  Whatever your level of ability, you can get a lot out of it – there’s always something to learn and the tutors are very helpful as well as being amazing players!  Put it in your diaries now – forms will be out soon.

Nearly there!

The Bandroom refurbishment gets closer to completion with the arrival of smart new curtains.  Practically every visitor to the Bandroom comments on how good it looks.  Please help to keep it looking smart by tidying up after yourselves!

Plants available – free to good homes and gardens!

Indoor plants – spider plants, shrimp plants (bromeliads), Scarborough lilies (Vallota), Tradescantias (Wandering Jew), assorted cacti.
Outdoor plants – perennials and a few shrubs.

Please see Anna for details – a donation to band funds would be appreciated!

Fund-raising

Last year we took the year off from fundraising, but now we need to start all over again!  We’ve bought new instruments, we want more uniforms – we need more money!!

If anybody has bright ideas about this – don’t keep them to yourselves.  Even better, if anyone wants to organise something – please do!  Obviously there are people who will help- you won’t have to do everything!  We already have offers to organise a Treasure Hunt and a big Raffle.  Keep the ideas and the offers coming!  Do talk to Dorothy about what you want to do and any ideas you may have!

If you are interested in helping with fund-raising, it would be good if we could set up some kind of email group to keep each other posted about what is going on.  Please let Catherine have your email addresses and we’ll try to get something organised.

Keep the ideas coming!!

Engagement lists

Please fill in your list and let Dorothy have it so that she can transfer everything to her master lists and see who can do what!  She will then give you your list back so that YOU know what you are doing – now, there’s a novelty!!  Meanwhile she can then settle down to the happy task of borrowing players to fill your seats while you are away!

April Concerts

The next one is conveniently located next door to Dorothy’s house.  Parking for this is easy – there’s quite a bit of parking space at the rear of the chapel, but if that’s full, park in Dorothy’s garden!

The following one is a private party at Sheriff Hutton Village Hall  - again there shouldn’t be any parking problems as the hall has plenty of parking available – be sure to be on time so that we can be set up before the main guest arrives!

Holiday List and Cleaning Rota

These will shortly be up on the notice board.  Please fill in the holiday list with dates when you know that you will be away so that Dorothy can try and find players to take your place in advance!

Also please sign up to the Cleaning rota to ensure that the Bandroom stays pristine!  Do ask Dorothy for details of what will need to be done.  Remember the more of us who sign up for this, the less often you’ll have to do it!

Calling all Learners (and their parents!)

Please note there will be NO Learners session on Easter Saturday!  Learners will resume on the following Saturday as usual. Meanwhile, Happy Easter to you all!

I do have a few cornet pull-through brushes at the bargain price of £4.00 each.  They aren’t the highest quality but at that price!  I’ll have them there on Saturday, so do ask!
