Swinton Post
Volume 5, Issue 9                                                                           September 2007

Well here we go again!…

The hunt for a bandmaster continues, who knows what the future holds!!  Meanwhile with Steve and John’s help we continue the hard work!

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Happy Birthday to:

Lizzie                 4th September
Rachel               11th September
Jessica              16th September
Kath                   17th September
Hedley               19th September
Will H.                 27th September
Josh                   28th September

As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!

Attention all Learners

Please note that as the main band has a job on Saturday 8th Sept, there will be no Learners session that night.

For the rest of the month, Steve and Tracey will be holding the fort as Catherine and Mike are on holiday.  Please let Dorothy know if you can’t make it, so that Steve and Tracey don’t hang around waiting for non-existent pupils!

Fund-raising

Last year we took the year off from fundraising so as a result there is a financial crisis!!

We really need more money - ideally from people who are not already giving loads to the band!If anybody has bright ideas about this – don’t keep them to yourselves.  Even better, if anyone wants to organise something – please do!

Obviously there are people who will help- you won’t have to do everything!  Keep the ideas and the offers coming!  Do talk to Dorothy about what you want to do and any ideas you may have!

Congratulations…

… to all those whose exam results have been fantastic.

Sarah, Maggie and Will S. all got excellent GCSE results – bravo!

Andrew, Chris and Ed also got superb A level results (Hoorah!) and so are off to university (Boo!) Don’t think, you three, that that lets you off the hook – we shall expect you back at Christmas to get cold and miserable with the rest of us – and you can never really leave Swinton (Just look at Lizzie and Susan!)

Well done, all of you!

Hardraw Scar Contest

Sunday is the big day and the coach will leave Dorothy’s at 9.15 a.m.  Please be there on time as we have to be at Hardraw by 12 noon.

On the day, please be sure your jacket is in its cover with your name on the cover and in your jacket.  It goes without saying that both your shoes and instrument should be polished, your socks should be black and your shirt ironed!

As well as the main pick-up at Dorothy’s, there will be pick-ups at Broughton Rise (outside Hedley’s) at 9.20, Kirkby Mills (Valerie’s) at 9.50 and Kirkbymoorside (John’s) at 9.55.  Dorothy will assume that you are coming to Norton unless you let her know to the contrary.  Please let her know if you want picking up at one of the other points, as we don’t want to hang around waiting for you at Norton if you are waiting at Kirkby!

There are a few places available on the coach for supporters – please see Dorothy quickly if a member of your family would like to come.

Please remember there will be an extra rehearsal on Friday 7th September at 7.30 p.m.  Please make every effort to be there!

Committee Meeting

There will be a regular Committee meeting on Thursday 13th September at 7.30 p.m.  If you have any items you want included on the agenda please let Dorothy know asap.

Vacancies

We are still short of cornets so if you know or hear of any experienced cornet (or even trumpet!) players looking for a band please try and point them in our direction - the more the merrier!

We shall also be losing horn and baritone players in September so if you know anyone who might be interested....

YHBBA Workshop Forms

The workshop is on Saturday 27th October at South Minsthorpe.  This is a really worthwhile day out – teaching from Grimethorpe players and excellent food!  Whatever your level of ability, you can get a lot out of it – there’s always something to learn and the tutors are very helpful as well as being amazing players!

It may be too late by now, it has been over-subscribed in recent years, but if you’d like to go, let Dorothy know and she will try and wangle you a place!

Thank You!

A big thank you to John for all the hard work he has put in preparing for Hardraw.  We have thoroughly enjoyed it – and hope he has too!

Thanks too for the concert on Sunday –if we play that well at Hardraw we shan’t be disgraced!

When was your instrument last bathed?

Does your instrument sound (or smell) as though something has died in it? Could you grow potatoes in your mouthpiece?

Help is at hand!  For the paltry sum of £5 your cornet can receive a full clean-out and shine-up! Larger instruments will cost £10 and it’s all in aid of Band funds!

John C. and Steve have volunteered to provide this service for those of you who don’t want to do it yourselves – so take advantage of it!
