Swinton Post
Volume 3, Issue 9                                                                             September 2005

It’s back to that time again...

... the start of the academic year, new schools, new universities and the parting of the ways!  And a new start!

Buy a Brick!

The “Buy a Brick” campaign is now well under way.  With over £500 raised so far we have covered our costs and are now well into profit!  So if you haven’t sold the tickets Jane issued you with – shame on you! Get selling!  NOW!  We really need the money – so does Tim!

Well done…..

…on all those fantastic exam results.  William H. and Matthew L. have both secured university places , but have taken pity on us – they are both taking a gap year, so we haven’t lost them yet! (But see above!)

Jack, Chris, Andrew and Nicole have also done really well in their exams – congratulations all round!

Congratulations, too, to Jane, who has been appointed as Deputy Mayor of Malton.  We now have friends in high places!!

A Gentleman of leisure!

You may have gathered that Brian has retired from teaching and is enjoying a well-earned respite from the delights of the classroom!  No doubt, he now has the time to apply his skills to getting the band into shape!!

A big Thank You…

… to the band for helping to make Mary and Stewart’s wedding such a memorable occasion.  It added an extra dimension to a lovely day and was widely appreciated by all!

The Band Room

As you can see, work on repairing and restoring the band room is well under way!  So keep fundraising – we need the money to pay for it!  And we’ll need to think about redecorating as well – which will mean more fundraising!!

Punctuality!

A gentle nudge!  Please can people turn up to band practice on time!  A 7.30 start means that we need to be ready to play at 7.30!  That means in your seat, with your music, warmed –up, with your mutes, valve oil, brain, whatever!

This will enable us to leave on time and spare the residents of Swinton, lots of noise late in the evening!

Do you know someone keen to learn?

There are some instruments available so if you know anyone of any age who’d like to start in learners, now would be a good time for them to start. Get in touch with Dorothy, Steve or Catherine for further details.

New Trustee

As a result of Ray’s death, a vacancy arose for a trustee (the people who nominally own the Band’s assets).  The committee discussed this and unanimously decided to appoint Jane to this responsibility!

Fond farewells!

As you may have realised we have bid a farewell to Robin as he moves back to playing for Kirkbymoorside Band.  We are very grateful to Steve who will be once again holding the fort (and the baton!) until we can find a new bandmaster!

Andrea will also be transferring her loyalties across  Ryedale.  We wish them both well with their banding !

Nicole is also finding that the pressure of school work does not fit with banding so is leaving us to concentrate on school work. Good luck and best wishes to you all!!

STOP PRESS

We are also having to say goodbye to Matthew L. who is heading off to Huddersfield to take a degree in Music.

50+ Club

As we come towards the start of a new season for the 50+ Club, we still need more people to join it.  Ask Brian for more details!

Best Wishes…

… to David and Jude

and

… to Andrea and Robin

as both couples get married this month!

Dorothy is collecting for a wedding present for Andrea and Robin from the band.  If you want to contribute please get it to her ASAP!

Attention all Learners.

Learners’ sessions have now resumed!

If you are not going to be at a session PLEASE let Dorothy know!  If you let Steve or me know as well, so much the better, but Dorothy will pass it on to us.  It is very depressing for us to sit in an empty Bandroom on a Saturday evening waiting for people not to turn up!  PLEASE LET US KNOW!

Band Calendar

As you may recall, last Christmas, I produced a calendar of photos from the year in aid of band funds costing £5.00.

As next year marks the band’s 70th anniversary, we have decided that the next calendar will feature archive photos as well as some from this year.

It would make production easier if I have some idea of the number required.  I’ll put up a list in the Bandroom for people to sign with numbers they might like!

Also if you have old photos which might be useful – please can you let me borrow them to scan or re-photograph!

Dates for your diary - PLEASE let Dorothy know if you can't make them!

Band Practice -  September 12th

As you may know, the projected filming session at Castle Howard is cancelled.  There WILL, however, be an important band practice in the Band Room. Phil Carter from Kirkbymoorside has agreed to take Swinton Band to Malton Brass and the Area Contest, and this will be his first session with us.   It is important that as many as possible are there, to give him an idea of the resources he has got, and to give us an idea of what he expects!
