!BAND DINNER NEWS!
Following a general feeling from the band Steve set himself the
unenviable task of finding a new venue for the band dinner. He looked high
and low and came forward with several suggestions, which were whittled
down by the committee to two possibilities. The band was presented with
the choices of the Bowling Club in Norton and The Lodge in Old Malton.
After a short deliberation, the unanimous decision was for The Lodge. The
date is yet to be confirmed but will probably be in the first part of next
year as normal.
So get looking for those dresses, twinkly accessories and of course the
very silly ties! It should be a good night especially as Matthew has
very kindly offered his services as DJ for the night. I have already
checked and he does have The Time Warp, YMCA and the Macarena, so it will
be business as usual on the dance floor (Robin!).
We have had a good few years up at The Manor House at Fridaythorpe with
many memorable occasions. So I would like to thank the staff and Steve for
contributing to those memories.
50+ Club
Dorothy would like to remind all the members of the 50+ Club that they
should have renewed their membership for year by now. There are also still
some spaces on the list for new members!
Membership is £12 a year, with the potential to win £20 first prize and
£5 second prize each month. Half of the money goes to band funds and the other half to prizes
‑ so it's a win win situation.
*Attention all Learners*
Due to main band commitments there will be no Learners on the 4th or 11th
of October. You are all welcome to come and watch the concerts instead!
An interesting date for your diary is Malton Brass. This would give you a
taster of Contesting. It is a fairly light entertainment contest so you
won’t (hopefully) have to listen to the same piece more than once! It is
an all day event but once you have your programme you can come and go in
between bands.
And of course the Main Band needs a fan club! We want to have the loudest
cheers! It is a local event and a good chance to hear a wide variety of
bands of all standards. In fact, this does not just apply to the Learners
but to all band members. Bring your parents, grandparents, children,
aunts, uncles, dog walker (!), anybody who enjoys Brass Bands.
Advance Warning!
Plans are under way to re-instate the Annual Solo Contest in the Spring.
This is open to everyone in both bands ‑ so get practising!
Birthdays
– ha ha, there is no escape from standing on your chair!

Mags – 3rd October (25!)

It seems l missed more than one person last month so belated Happy
Birthdays go to:

and William H.
If I have still missed you out - I'm really sorry and I hope you all
enjoy(ed) your Birthdays.

“Andy’s Pint”
Over the last couple of months Mike has been up at the Wolds Silver
Workshop in Leppington making the Trophy.
The most popular designs chosen by both Stape and Swinton Bands, were the
Pint Glass and the Tankard. These were then both put forward to Ruth who chose the
Pint Glass.
A few weeks later a flat piece of Silver had been transformed into a Pint
Glass (well 1.3 pints actually!). This was then sent to the London Assay
Office where it was hallmarked. Work still to be done includes the gilding
of the inside of the Cup, engraving and the construction of an oaken
plinth.
Once completed Ruth would like a gathering down at Suddaby's in order to
christen the cup before it is presented to the Best Bass Section at Malton
Brass. The date for this has been set as Saturday 18th October
any time from 7.30pm onwards. All past and present members of both Swinton
and Stape are very welcome.
Get
Well Soon
As some of you may know our President, Colonel Tetley has been suffering
from ill health recently. We would like to extend our best wishes to him
and all his family, and sincerely hope he will be feeling better by
Christmas when we visit.
A
lovely day....
Last Saturday the band played at Katie Leadill's wedding, which was
much enjoyed by all. Thanks to the Leadill family for their generous
contribution to the social fund. And now we know why Becky wanted the
purple uniforms!
Can
You Help?
As you may have noticed recently Catherine has been burrowing around in
the cupboards again (she seems to have misunderstood when spring cleaning
is!). In her burrowings Catherine has created a Solo folder. This contains
Practice copies of (in theory) all the Solo parts we have.
However, there are more than a few gaps. Do you have or know the location
of any of these missing solos or any parts of music? There will be an
amnesty box at the front of the band room where you may anonymously return
any borrowed parts you may have at home or in your cases. Any borrowed
parts that you are working on, outside of the folders, could you please
ensure are signed out.
Meanwhile feel free to borrow the practice copies, these are photocopies
so loss is not punishable by death, but do try and return them for others
to use!
Another Baby!
Many of you will remember one of our former Solo Horn and Solo Cornet
players, Vicky Smith. At the end of September she gave birth to a bouncing
baby boy, Ali weighing in at 6lb and lOoz. I'm sure you will all join me
in congratulating Vicky and her family and wishing them all the luck for
the future.
TIP OF THE MONTH......
Find your lyre! It isn't long before Remembrance and carolling. See
Dorothy if you haven't had one, hang your head in shame if you've lost
yours! If the latter is the case, Banks' may still have some or Dorothy
might be kind. |
