Swinton Post
Volume 5, Issue 11                                                                           November 2007

It’s winter again …

… and there’s the usual crop of lurgies around.  Please try and stay fit and free of accidents – we need a nice healthy active band for the next couple of months – you can be ill in January, but not before!!

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Happy Birthday to:

Jason            19th November
Will S.
         29th November

As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!

Attention all Learners

Please note that on 17th November, the night before Malton Brass, there will not be a group practice for learners but only lessons.  This is because there will be a main band practice that evening for the contest the following day.  All learners and their parents are very welcome to stay on and listen to the practice if they would like a sneak preview of our performance!

That night aside, learners will continue pretty much as usual until 1st December) and will not resume until 12th January.

This does not mean that December is “time off”!  We hope that all learners will participate in the vast amount of carolling that will be done during December!  So dig out gloves and hats and join us!

We also hope that mums, dads etc. will help as collectors!  Please let Dorothy know if you are available to help with this.

Malton Brass – time change

For any of you who have friends, relations etc who are thinking of coming to the contest, please make them aware that there has been a change in the start time.  Instead of a 10.00 a.m. start the first band will now play at 11.00 am.  This does not in any way affect the time that we shall be playing!

Webb Ivory

Last call for ordering for Christmas – Dorothy will be sending off her order VERY shortly so please get your orders in NOW! This is a useful earner for the band –so please get ordering!

Christmas is coming – yes, really!

In this month’s newsletter you will find details of where, when and for how long we shall be freezing our assets off!  Please do your best to get to as many jobs as possible – after all, it’s our main fund-raiser of the year!  Remember, you don’t need uniform, just as many layers of woollies as you can manage and still remain mobile! (Please wear band jumpers for pub jobs though!) Christmassy hats, gloves etc. are a good idea, as are lights, tinsel etc.  A lyre is VITAL – if you have one, don’t forget it, if not, see Dorothy NOW!

If there are jobs that you cannot do, especially the concerts, PLEASE let Dorothy know immediately, if not sooner!

Meanwhile, we shall need collectors – so start badgering at parents, partners, friends and relations to come and help, and get offers of help to Dorothy rolling in ASAP!

Extra Band practices

In the run up to Malton Brass there are some extra practices scheduled.  So in the week before the contest, as well as the normal Monday and Wednesday practices, there will be practices on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.  Please do your utmost to be there so that we can put on a really good show on the Sunday!

Vacancies

We are still short of cornets so if you know or hear of any experienced cornet (or even trumpet!) players looking for a band please try and point them in our direction - the more the merrier!

We could also use a second euphonium so if you know anyone who might be interested....

Calling all parents of junior band members.

Just a quick plea to parents coming to collect children after band; can you please be prompt in picking up. Obviously no-one is going to leave the children unsupervised in Swinton, but everyone wants to get home and the residents don’t like prolonged disturbance!  Do feel free to come a bit early and listen to the band practising!

Jumble Sale

We have just heard that the “Jumblies” at Sheriff Hutton are prepared to hold a Jumble Sale for us on 12th April 2008.  These are great profit-makers for the band so please start saving your jumble now!  More details nearer the time.

Courtesy at Band Practices

A gentle reminder to ALL band members.  Obviously we are all at band because we want to enjoy ourselves, but time is limited and we do want to use it well.  This means the conductor doesn’t want to have to say everything 20 times over because people weren’t listening when he said it the first time! Unlike many bands, we have a tea break to allow everyone to have a good chat and to sort out any problems.  So we don’t need to do it during practice!

Please:

Get mutes, pencils, glasses of water, folders etc. before we start to play. Also try and get your instrument warm.

As soon as a piece is announced, get it up on the stand.

Don’t talk when the conductor is talking, and listen to what he says even if he’s talking to someone else – then you’ll know where we are!

Details about upcoming jobs

Remembrance Parade, Helmsley.
We are very short of players for this so please make every effort to get there!  If you know of any players at a loose end please let Dorothy know!!

We meet in the car park by the castle, where there will be reserved parking for the band.  Please remember to bring lyres, straps etc. (and of course poppies!)

This job can be very chilly and wet, so it is a good idea to wear extra layers under your uniform and bring gloves (preferably black)!  And please do not forget your band waterproof – the parade has only been cancelled for weather once since the last war!!

Christmas Lights.  We meet in the Market Place in Malton at 5.45 for a 6.00 start.  Please wear warm clothes, gloves etc. And remember your lyre!
