Swinton Post
Volume 2, Issue 11                                                                              November  2004

OK- one month on, and I’m still here and still waiting for the rush of volunteers to take on this rewarding and responsible post.  Come on, you lazy lot, there must be somebody out there!  Oh well, in the meantime I’ll just carry on as usual......

It’s also coming out just a touch early so that I can get details of extra practices in!!

Andy’s Pint night

On Saturday night (23rd October) a number of Wetherby & District Silver Band members came through to Suddaby’s to meet up with Swinton and Stape to “re-christen” the trophy they won at Malton Brass last year. A good time was had by all concerned and it was a great evening of celebration.  Hopefully this may become an annual event!  In any case we will all hope to meet up after Malton Brass (with the trophy??)

Christmas Social

Once again it’s getting towards the festive season, and the word is that Stape are organising again!  Last year they hosted a fantastic Buffet and Disco at Norton Bowling Club for all the Ryedale Bands.  This year they are hoping to hold one on the other side of Ryedale on 8th January.  Details on the venue and the cost will be available nearer the time but before finalising arrangements, they would like an idea of numbers.  So, if you think you might like to go, put your name down on the list in the bandroom.

The Bandroom Wall (cont.)...

Do please continue to tell the world about the scary state of the bandroom wall.  While we are doing well with fundraising, there’s still an awful lot of money to be found!   Has anybody got any ideas??

Meanwhile, it is hoped that emergency work will start on November 21st which will stop it actually falling round our ears!

Get well soon!

Sorry to hear that William H. has had an accident that will keep him from playing for a while.  We all hope that he will make a quick recovery!

Tip of the Month......

It’s too late to clean out your instrument before Malton Brass. But it’s never too late to clean out your mouthpiece, and to make sure your instrument is polished.  If it’s lacquered all it needs is a rub with a duster.  If it’s silver, then it’s hard work with a silver cloth or Goddard’s silver polish and a lot of elbow grease – pity the bass players!

Christmas Post (yes really!!)

Christmas will soon be upon us, which means that it’s nearly time for Dorothy to turn into a Postie! The Christmas Card letter box will be open at Dorothy’s from the 1st of December with final posting on the 19th. The Christmas card letterbox is a way for you to send (and receive) all your Christmas cards for the band.

New and old instruments

More thanks are due this month to another generous band member!  This time it’s Michael L. who has kindly given the band a three-quarter size Bach trombone for the use of learners.  Thank you, Michael – I’m sure it will be in use before very long!

Homes are still sought for two basses. There is a Besson Sovereign lacquered BB flat available for £1,000 o.n.o. and a Besson 700 silver-plated E flat for £850 o.n.o.  If you or anyone you know is interested, do let Dorothy know as we really need the space (to say nothing of the money!)

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Thomas - 8th

Andrea - 13th

William S. -28th

If I have missed you out, I'm really sorry and I hope you all enjoy(ed) your Birthdays.

A Big Thank-you...

...to all the students who thought they’d got away from the pressures of band life but are nobly sacrificing their giddy social lives at universities across the country to come back to help us out for Malton Brass.

Extra Band Practices!!

There will be extra practices for the contest
on Sunday 31st October at 2.30 p.m.and Saturday 6th November at 7.30 p.m.  There will also be a practice in the Bandroom at 10.00 a.m. on the day of the contest.

Also be aware that band practice on Monday 1st November will be at Norton College rather than in the Bandroom!

It’s that time of the year……

….. and a letter will soon be coming to you all about caroling and the need for collectors.  After all there’s not a lot of point in our blowing our heads off and freezing our (select suitable portion of anatomy here) off if there’s no-one to collect the money!

However in addition to the street collections we are also looking for one or two dads who would like to come to collect as we do the rounds of the local pubs.  These pub crawls take place on Friday and Saturday nights and cover a lot of mileage.  It’s hard work but it is good fun.  If you could help with this, please contact Dorothy (694344)

All Change!

Mary and Lizzie are both joining new bands this year.  Mary has signed for Tullis Russell Mills Band in Glenrothes, while Lizzie is signing for Besses o' th' Barn.

Meanwhile David and Nicolette are moving back north again even if it is still the wrong side of the Pennines.
