I’m attempting to save the planet..

Birthdays

Happy Birthday to:

As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!

Band Folders

It’s always a good thing if people want to take folders home to practice! Please do!

However, it is important that the folders are always at Band Practice, whether or not you are!  Paradoxically, it’s particularly important if you are the only player on a part – If Kevin wants the part filled in, we need the music!

So if you are not going to be able to make it to a practice – please ensure that your folder does!  Get it to Dorothy or Catherine so that they can take it to practice. Of course if you are not going to be at a job this applies even more.

Now that everyone (I hope) is taking their purple folders home on a regular basis to practise, it may be worth reminding people that this means that YOU and not the librarian, the trailer driver or whoever, are responsible for ensuring that your folder is at the job!  Obviously we will do a quick scan of the Bandroom and bring the boxes where the music should be, but….

And if you are taking a black folder home – please let Dorothy or Catherine know so that we don’t spend hours looking for your folder when we are packing things up to go to a job!

Vacancies

If you know or hear of any experienced cornet (or trumpet even!) players looking for a band please try and point them in our direction – the more the merrier!

We shall also be losing horn and baritone players come September, so if you know of anyone who might be interested….

There are still some places in the learners group available!  Parents, if you are not already playing or learning, come and give it a try! If you are transporting your children, you might as well have fun learning too! (The editor can personally recommend this as an approach!)

Going out on jobs – things to remember

Please ensure that you always have with you:
·           Lyre
·           Waterproof jacket
·           Valve oil
·           A named jacket cover with your jacket inside. (Jackets should not be put on until just before we play and should be taken off immediately afterwards)

Please ensure that both instrument and jacket cases are tidied away out of sight before the concert begins – preferably in cars or in the trailer unless the organisers have provided somewhere else for this.

Please be punctual – remember that summer jobs mean holiday traffic – allow extra time to get there.

Please help set up and pull down – don’t leave it to the same old workhorses who seem to know what they’re doing.  How do you think they learnt??

YHBBA Workshop.

Advance notice that this will be on Saturday 27th October at South Minsthorpe.  This is a really worthwhile day out – teaching from Grimethorpe players and excellent food!  Whatever your level of ability, you can get a lot out of it – there’s always something to learn and the tutors are very helpful as well as being amazing players!  Put it in your diaries now – forms will be out soon.

Fund-raising

Last year we took the year off from fundraising so as a result there is a financial crisis!!

Seriously though, now we need to start all over again!  We’ve bought new instruments, we want more uniforms – we really need more money and as soon as possible!!  Ideally this money should come from people who are not already giving loads to the band!

If anybody has bright ideas about this – don’t keep them to yourselves.  Even better, if anyone wants to organise something – please do!  Obviously there are people who will help- you won’t have to do everything!  We already have offers to organise a Treasure Hunt and a big Raffle.  Keep the ideas and the offers coming!  Do talk to Dorothy about what you want to do and any ideas you may have!

If you are interested in helping with fund-raising, it would be good if we could set up some kind of email group to keep each other posted about what is going on.  Please let Catherine have your email addresses and we’ll try to get something organised.

Keep the ideas coming!!

May Concerts

The concerts over the Late Spring bank holiday weekend are both ones where we need to be certain of arriving on time, and there are often severe traffic problems.  PLEASE allow extra time (at least half an hour EXTRA!) to get there!  If you are early you can always find something to do but being late really shows and the organisers have been known to complain!

Holiday and Engagement Lists

The Holiday list is now up on the board. Please fill in the dates when you know that you will be away so that Dorothy can try and find players to take your place in advance!

Please fill in your engagement list and let Dorothy have it so that she can transfer everything to her master lists and see who can do what!  She will then give you your list back so that YOU know what you are doing – now, there’s a novelty!!  Meanwhile she can then settle down to the happy task of borrowing players to fill your seats while you are away!

Calling all Learners (and their parents!)

Please note there will be NO Learners session on 19th May as the main band is playing out that night.  Do feel free though to join the audience for this Charity Concert organised by our very own Jane!
