It’s
the most wonderful time of all the year

It’s
that time of the year again folks when we dig out the big jumpers and the
woolly hats, decorate our instruments with silly amounts of tinsel and in
certain cases fill our hip flasks with weird and wonderful drinks.
That’s right, it’s time for carolling again!
Birthdays

Ha
ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!
Happy Birthday to:
Alice
21st December
As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!
Christmas
Cards
Dorothy has asked me to remind you all that shortly she will be
taking on the role of Christmas Postie! The Christmas card box will open
at her house on December the 1st and final
posting will be on the 22ndth. So to take some of the
hassle out of your band Christmas cards, drop them down to Dorothy and she
will sort them out.
A
gentle reminder….
from
Dorothy about carolling and the need for collectors and players.
Dorothy NEEDS to know who is available for each job.
They should have been in by now but please let her have your
carolling lists as soon as may be!
And PLEASE let her know if there are jobs you cannot do, ASAP.
Phone her on 01653 694344 or 07974785331.

about upcoming jobs
Christmas
Lights.
We meet in the Market Place in Malton at 5.45 for a 6.00 start.
Please wear warm clothes, gloves etc. And remember your lyre!
Malton Market Place.
We all know this is a long job and a bit of an undertaking.
Please make the morning slot (10.00 till 1.00) a priority in terms
of commitment, as that’s when most shoppers are around!
If possible we will carry on till 3.00 but let’s put on a good
show in the morning!
Swinton Pub Carols (Christmas Eve). This is a new departure for the
village and it would be good to put on a good show.
Even if you don’t usually turn out on Christmas Eve, please
consider coming just for this – Mince pies and Mulled wine will be
served!

Malton
Brass
Well done all for a fine
performance at Malton – pity about the result, but as you will realise
on reading the adjudication, it was simply a case of very fierce
competition this year.
And considering how below strength we were in terms of numbers, it
was a great achievement.
Especial credit must go to Sarah who played magnificently as
principal, Josephine our soloist and of course most of all to Nigel who
made the necessary hard work such fun so that we could give a performance
we can be proud of.
Thanks to all, and a special thank you to those players who came to help
us out: thank
you to Andy and Georgina for all your help!
Back
to Work!
Band
practices start up again on 7th January with Nigel who will be
working both on the area test piece and material for the summer programme.
Practice copies of the test piece are available – if you haven’t got one
ask Dorothy or Catherine!
Learners’ sessions start again on 12th January – meanwhile we
hope to see you out getting cold and wet with the rest of us!
Vacancies
We are still short of cornets so if you know or hear of any
experienced cornet (or even trumpet!) players looking for a band please try
and point them in our direction - the more the merrier!
We could also use a second euphonium so if you
know anyone who might be interested....
TIP
OF THE MONTH
A Kelly (plastic)
mouthpiece is a really good investment for carolling!
They stay really warm! There are a few available from band but they
aren’t expensive if we haven’t got one to fit your instrument.
Sadly they don’t do horns!
Calling
all parents of junior band members.
Just a quick plea to parents
coming to collect children after band; can you please be prompt in picking
up. Obviously no-one is going to leave the children unsupervised in Swinton,
but everyone wants to get home and the residents don’t like prolonged
disturbance!
Do feel free to come a bit early and listen to the band practising!
Kirkbymoorside
Band – Christmas Social.
This is at Kirkbymoorside
Golf Club on January 25th.
If you haven’t put your name on the list for this but would like to
go, please let Dorothy know as soon as possible.
The cost is Ł11 each – please can you let Dorothy have the money
(cheques payable to Dorothy please!) by 10th January at the
latest!

The
year that was 2007
started well with a smart and gleaming refurbished Bandroom needing only a
few finishing touches!
r
The
year was characterised by a profound shortage of cornet players, which led
to our not contesting at Darlington.
r
In
March at the Band Dinner we bid farewell to Brian as he retired as Chairman.
r
In
June, Dan joined us again for a very successful concert in aid of African
Mission under the baton of Derek Worley.
r
A
number of band members went to Saddleworth to help out other bands at the
Whit-Friday contests and came back determined that Swinton should do them
next year!
r
Over
the summer disaster struck when Ian fell off a ladder and ended up in
hospital. The addition this made to Kevin’s workload gave him no
option but to give up banding.
r
An
assortment of conductors helped us to fulfil our engagements over the rest
of the year – thanks to John, Derek, Nigel, Cliff, Stewart, Lizzie, Dan
and, of course, Steve!
r
September
saw our first venture to Hardraw Scar contest under John, where we actually
won a trophy!
r
November
saw us at Malton Brass with Nigel –hopefully a start of good things to
come!
r
Over
the year we welcomed Jason, Thomas B.,
Tom C. and Cieran on cornet, Ian on euphonium, Ellis on baritone, and
welcomed back Janella on cornet.
We waved goodbye to Andrew, Chris and Ed as they went off to Uni.,
Thomas B. as he went off to boarding school, Lizzie as she moved to
Huddersfield (though she has frequently returned to help out the cornet
line!) and to Ian, Harry, Luke and of course Kevin.
