Volume 2, Issue 12                                                                              December  2004

     Merry Christmas!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…......

It’s that time of the year again folks when we dig out the big jumpers and the woolly hats, decorate our instruments with silly amounts of tinsel and in certain cases fill our hip flasks with weird and wonderful drinks. That’s right, it’s time for caroling again!

A gentle reminder……

…….. f
rom Dorothy about caroling and the need for collectors.  At the time of going to press she has had only TWO collectors letters returned!!

We need £8,000 for the Bandroom wall so we really need those collectors.  Please get those offers of help rolling in – NOW!  After all, the first caroling trip is on Wednesday (Yes, THIS Wednesday!!!)

Calling all Learners

There will be no more Saturday practices until 8th January.  This is not because we think you need a rest, but it is so that you can come out and get cold and miserable like the rest of us!

Seriously, we would be very glad of your help at as many of the caroling jobs as possible.  Bring your instrument and a lyre if you have one, and wrap up warm as you can – it is quite possible to play in gloves, though only trombonists can play in mittens.  It would help if you let Dorothy know if you are expecting to come so that you know exactly where we meet and we don’t set off without you.

If any parents, grandparents, relatives, friends could help with collecting Dorothy would be overjoyed, please let her know!

TIP OF THE MONTH......

.......
When crossing water hold on to all removable parts of your instrument, this should avoid losing parts such as your mouthpiece in to places like Thornton Dale Beck! You wouldn’t be the first to do so and probably won’t be the last! (Acting editor hangs head in shame!!)

The year that was 2004 .........

.......has been a lively one! In March we went to Darlington and came a respectable 6th with Viscaya, ensuring that we stay in the 3rd Section for at least another year.

Spring cleaning led to the interesting discovery that only the glass in the windows was holding the end wall of the bandroom up! So, just as we thought we’d finished major fundraising.....

Next, Robin resigned as Bandmaster because of family and work commitments!  All thanks to Stewart T, Steve and Stewart W. who kept us going over the summer.  However the autumn saw Robin admit to his addiction and return to the band!

A sad loss to the band was our President Col. Tetley who passed away in September.  However his son, Christopher, has taken over as President with fantastic enthusiasm.

Over the year we welcomed Maggie to the cornet back row, Josephine to horn and Michael L. to trombone. In September we waved goodbye to Josh and Heather as they went off to Uni. Becki took over as principal - her heroism was awesome as the front row vanished around her - Mary having completed her year at BP also went back to St Andrews! We also saw the move of Will to Euph and the re-appearance of Andrea as a front-row cornet. We look forward to Megan joining us on horn and Matthew L. returning to the cornet line-up in January.

So now it’s December, let’s start looking forward to next year!

Christmas Cards

Dorothy has asked me to remind you all that shortly she will be taking on the role of Christmas Postie! The Christmas card box will open at her house on December the 1st and final posting will be on the 19th. So to take some of the hassle out of your Christmas cards, drop them down to Dorothy and she will sort them out.

Christmas Social    *    *

Once again it’s the festive season, and the word is that Stape are organising again!  Last year they hosted a fantastic Buffet and Disco at Norton Bowling Club for all the Ryedale Bands.  This year it is to be on 8th January at the Golf Club in Kirkbymoorside.  It will cost £12 for adults and £6 for children and should be a really good night out!  So, if you think you might like to go, put your name down on the list in the bandroom or let Dorothy know as soon as possible.

Another gentle reminder...

We still need an editor for this newsletter! Please, Santa, send me a nice, enthusiastic gossiphound who wants to undertake this essential role!

Oh well, HAPPY CHRISTMAS anyway!
