Merry Christmas!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…......

It’s that time of the year again folks when we dig out the big jumpers and the woolly hats, decorate our instruments with silly amounts of tinsel and in certain cases fill our hip flasks with weird and wonderful drinks. That’s right, it’s time for carolling again! You should all have a list of carolling dates, but if you don’t fear not! Dorothy has plenty, and can always find more!

I will apologise now for the clipart – I got carried away!

Birthdays – ha ha, there is no escape from standing on your chair!
Helen S – 22nd Dec
Jack – 24th Dec

The usual applies – I hope you all have a very happy birthday and if I missed anyone – SORRY!

Christmas Cards
Dorothy has asked me to remind you all that shortly she will be taking on the role of Christmas Postie! The Christmas card box will open at her house on December the 1st and final posting will be on the 21st. So to take some of the hassle out of your Christmas cards, drop them down to Dorothy and she will sort them out.

Attention all Learners

As I reported last month and as you may have gathered this month involves a lot of carols! All learners are welcome to come and join us on all the band caroling jobs. Playing members are not the only people who are welcome, Mums, Dads, Cousins, Aunts, Uncles or anybody else who would be prepared to support and help the band collect at any of the jobs would be much appreciated.

Congratulations

Congratulations go to Heather, not only was she been selected as the Malton, Norton & District Lions representative for the Annual Youth Award Scheme, but now she has won the next round and has been selected to represent the North & Scotland at the National finals in Dudley in February. If she wins that, then she’ll be heading for sunnier Spain to represent Great Britain. She won a bursary of £500 which she gave to the Youth Drama group down at St Peters, Norton.  We wish Heather the very best of luck when she heads down to Dudley.

Welcome!

It is with great pleasure that I welcome a new player to our ranks! Claire Carey has decided to come and join us on Tenor Horn. If she can survive the next month, she’ll survive anything!

Quick Reminder

Dorothy would just like to remind everybody to give her an idea of which carolling jobs they are likely to be going to. Could any potential collectors also let her know which jobs they can attend.

The year that was 2003.

This year has seen changes in the band. In March the band headed up to Darlington and came a respectable 6th with Northern Landscapes, which ensured that we stay in the 3rd Section for at least another year.

May saw the arrival of the new and very smart band jackets but the gods seemed to be conspiring against us. The summer was so good that there were only a few occasions that the jackets were worn.

Over the year we welcomed Roger & Jessica to the cornet back row,  Will to Bari and Martin to Eb Bass. Then in September we waved goodbye to two of our   principals who were replaced by Chris and Heather. We also saw the move of Nicole to Solo Cornet, Steve to Euph and back again to bass and then more recently Matthew L to Euph. And in case you hadn’t noticed after several years’ absence I have appeared in the Solo Cornet line for a year. I am not the only player to miraculously re-appear, so has Tracy! In November we also welcomed Claire to our Horn line.

November saw Malton Brass and the presentation of Andy’s Pint as well as the delivery of the new drum kit (how Dorothy got that in the boot of her car I will never know!)

So now it’s December, let’s start looking forward to next year!

Good Luck

It may come as little surprise to many of you that Lee has decided to return to Australia, but this time permanently. He applied for his visa in October, and then last month he headed for Australia House in London where for some bizarre reason they granted him one and so he headed down under on November 23rd. His email address is; gljames63@yahoo.com. He would like people to stay in contact and send him the gossip.

*Christmas Parties *

There are 3 Christmas social events coming up in the near future. The first is Dorothy’s on Christmas Eve after carolling and midnight mass, with the usual sumptuous spread I am assured. Secondly, any survivors of this are welcome at the Stallybrasses from 7.30 p.m. on Boxing Day. The third date is the Christmas Social for all Ryedale bands on January 10th. The price has gone up from last month and is now £9. Some people have put their names on the list in the band room, but could all those who want to go, let Dorothy know and get the money to her by December 20th.

TIP OF THE MONTH......

When crossing water hold on to all removable parts of your instrument, this should avoid losing parts such as your mouthpiece in to places like Thornton Dale Beck! You wouldn’t be the first to do so and probably won’t be the last!
