Swinton Post
Volume 4, Issue 7                                                                           August 2006

Welcome back to Swinton Post!

As promised, I have been sweating over my computer to ensure that  this month’s edition is early because Dorothy is off to the ends of the earth for the summer – and there is, as a consequence, a lot of important information! Please take it all on board!

Dorothy’s Summer Holiday

As most of you probably know Dorothy is becoming a lady of leisure as she retires at the end of this week – I’m sure Norton College catering will never be the same again!  Congratulations, Dorothy, you will be missed!

As a result she is able to take a really good holiday and is off to the other side of the world for most of the summer.

While she is away, she is leaving the band in Brian’s capable hands, so any queries, problems or excuses should be addressed to him.  Hopefully there won’t be any and the band will continue to run like a well-oiled machine, but if you need to contact him his number is 01904 468435.

Congratulations!

To Tom, Matthew, Susan and Lizzie on their degrees at Newcastle, Sheffield and Salford Universities.  Matthew has achieved a 1st and the rest of them 2:1 and they are now out in the real world.   Sadly this means that Thomas and Matthew are moving out of the area before long, but I’m sure they’ll be back from time to time!

Congratulations are also due to former bandmaster Stewart and Rachel who celebrated their wedding last week.  We wish them all the best as they start their married life.

Another date for the diary!

19th-23rd July – Suddaby’s Summer Beer Festival.  All of a sudden you will find all our ex-players return to Malton – I wonder why!  These evenings are great – good beer, live music (including, I believe our very own Hedley!) and a chance to socialise and catch up with old friends.

Attention all Learners (and Main Band!)

Owing to circumstances beyond our control (holidays!) there will be no learners’ sessions on 12th, 19th and 26th August.  This does not give you an excuse not to practise!  I shall be taking my bass on holiday with me- you can all practise too!

There WILL be Learners on 2nd September, but as Main band has a job on at Thirsk Races it will not start till 6.30p.m. and there will be no group session.

Looking ahead, on 30th September and 7th October, the Main Band has concerts on.  On those days Learners will be at 2.30 p.m.   Dan Hunt will be the guest soloist for the 7th October and will be teaching at Learners that afternoon.  If any members of Main Band (especially euphs and baris!) would like a lesson with Dan, they are very welcome, but it would help if you can let Lizzie, Steve or me know in advance!

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Happy Birthday to:

Derek                         6th August
Dorothy                     6th August
Colin                         18th August

As usual to anyone else I have missed – Happy Birthday!

Details about upcoming jobs

Cayton.  Please remember lyres, straps if you need them and sensible shoes that you can march in.  If the weather stays as it is, lots of bottled water would also be sensible.

Peasholme Park.  Please allow time to park and be punctual as the boat will take you across to the bandstand at 1.30 sharp.  Take drinks etc. for the interval over so that as few as possible need to be ferried to and fro during the interval.

Filey.  The toilets just below the bandstand are NOT available to us this year, and the nearest ones are in Glen Gardens about 5 minutes walk away.  Brian will have details as to where to find them!

Looking Good!

  • Please don’t dismiss this as just another nag – it is something that makes a huge difference to how we are perceived and so on whether people want to employ us!  Don’t let everyone down!

  • When everything is out of the trailer, please put your instrument cases, jacket cases etc. safely out of sight in the trailer.

  • Please DO NOT hang cases on the bandstand or on the back of your chair.

  • Assume that we will be wearing jackets unless the man in charge says otherwise.  If he does, then please fit in with the majority – whether it be shirt-sleeves or cagoules!

  • Please ensure that you have a jacket cover with your name on it in which you bring your jacket to jobs.  Do not wear it on the way to the job – it will get creased and sad-looking

  • Also ensure that your name is written on a piece of card or similar in the inside pocket of your jacket

  • Do not eat while wearing your jacket – especially not ice-cream!

  • And finally – at the end of the summer, getting your jacket dry-cleaned is a good idea!
