Swinton Post
Volume 2, Issue 8                                                                              August 2004

It’s that time of the month when yet again I sit in front of the computer with a puzzled look! Though this month I have managed to get 2 pages again!

Treasure Hunt

Matthew ‘Mayo’ Mayo and Peter ‘Pete’ Cuthill have organised a treasure hunt in aid of band funds. The hunt starts at Wentworth Street car park at 4pm on Sunday 22nd August. The hunt leads to a secret destination where there will be a BBQ for all who manage to make it there successfully! Entry is £10 per team and a team is as many people as you can fit into a car (legally!). In order for Pete and Mayo to ensure that there are enough sausages for the starving hundreds, please can you let them know if you are intending on taking part in the hunt.

Birthdays

Ha ha – There is no escape from standing on your chair!

Derek – 6th
Colin – 18th

Dorothy – The Cheeky minx won’t tell me when!

I hope I have got it right this month and apologise if I have missed anyone. Happy Birthday to anyone I have missed!

Is your Instrument Revolting?

If so why not employ the services of Lizzie and Matthew P. They have bravely (or maybe foolishly) offered their services as instrument cleaners in aid of band funds. They will clean any instrument for the small charge of £5 (£10 in the case of basses) all the money goes to the band funds. They are currently on holiday but will be back August 14th, so get your instrument in the queue!

TIP OF THE MONTH......

Take advantage of Lizzie and Matthews’s idiocy and get them to clean out your instrument! It saves you (or your mum) a job and raises money for band funds.

Brassed Off

The theatre production of Brassed off is coming to York next month and the band is making a group booking to all go together. So if you want to go get your name signed up on the list on the cupboard door so that Dorothy can get the tickets booked. The band is going on Thursday 9th September for the 19:30 showing. Students and under 25’s go for just £3.50, and if 10 or more people go, then there is a group booking discount.

Grand Balloon Race

It’s not long now until the launch of the Grand Balloon race (August 29th) and you need to make sure that you have sold all your tickets. We have now sold enough tickets to cover the costs of the balloons and prizes, so all tickets sold now are profit, and obviously the more we sell the better. The money raised from this race will go towards the £8000 needed for repairs to the band room, so it is important to get selling tickets.

The tickets are £2 each and the prize for the balloon which travels the furthest is £100. The person who returns the balloon which travels the furthest also wins £10.

Lizzie’s record of selling 50 tickets has been beaten and it hasn’t even been by a band member! Wendy Loveday-Foulds has managed to sell in the region of 100 tickets on behalf of the band. So I think a big thank-you and well done to Wendy. So a new record has been set, can anybody beat this one?

The Band Garden Fete

The garden fete is looming and Tracey needs your help! On Thursday (12th August) there is going to be a leafleting run round Norton. Tracey needs as many people as possible to help put leaflets through letterboxes to publicise the garden fete. People will be meeting at St Nicolas St car park at 6pm, let Dorothy know if you can make it.

Items are still needed for the following stalls;

Cakes (on the day to Jane)

Bottle Stall (to Kath, drinks only & wrapped)
          Bric-a-brac (to Mr & Mrs Ponton-Brown)

Tombola (to Mrs Whitfield/Mrs Mayo)

Raffle (to Derek)

Bran tub (to Mrs Gillie)

Books (Valerie)

Children’s toys (tbc)

Chipped & cracked crockery (for smashing
          apparently!) – Tom & Pete.

Tracey is still looking for volunteers to help out on the day to help set up, run things and clear away at the end of the day (so expect a phone call if you aren’t already helping out!).

The garden fete is an important chance for us to raise more money for the bandroom repairs so the more people who help the better!

Band photos

There are still CDs available of the band dinner photos at £3 each. Catherine is still collecting photos for the “Swinton Band 2004 Album”, so if you have any photos you would like to share pass them on!

Band Bowling Trip

It has been agreed that the band bowling trip will be on Tuesday 31st August at Clifton Moor Megabowl. If you want ago you need to get your name to Dorothy ASAP so that she can book it, the sooner she can book it the cheaper it will be!

It will cost at most £15.99 per person which will include a meal, drinks vouchers, shoes and 2 games. You will need to arrange your own transport to Clifton Moor MegaBowl however. These trips have always been great fun in the past and it would be great if we could get as many people together as possible, as usual friends and family are welcome to come and laugh at my unique bowling style!
